Kirby Fell

The walk up Kirby Fell from Skipton isn't particularly long, but it's steep enough to make you feel like you've earned the view when you reach the top. On a clear day, you're looking across the Pennine moorland with the distinctive shape of Pendle Hill visible to the south - proper dramatic stuff if the weather plays ball.

It's a straightforward fell rather than a serious mountaineering project. Most people knock it out in a couple of hours return, which makes it ideal if you're camping at one of the nearby spots - Malham Glamping Pods is barely twenty minutes away by car, or Wood Nook if you prefer a traditional caravan setup. The path itself is well-trodden and doesn't require any special kit, though it can be boggy after rain, so decent boots matter.

Families with older kids will get more from it than very young ones. Toddlers will struggle with the gradient, but anyone aged eight and upwards should manage fine if they're used to a bit of walking. The views are the main draw here - there's no visitor centre or facilities on the fell itself, so bring water and a snack.

Go early if you can. The fell attracts walkers, and by mid-morning on weekends you'll have company. Winter mornings when there's frost and low cloud can be oddly beautiful, though spring is reliably good. It's free to walk, obviously, and sits well within a broader Pennine walking holiday based around Skipton or Malham.
