King's Wood

King's Wood sits on the edge of Winscombe in Somerset, a proper woodland walk that doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't. You get trees, paths, and decent views across the Mendips if you time it right - that's the deal. The wood itself is managed as a local nature reserve, so there's the occasional information board about what lives here, though the main appeal is just getting amongst the beech and oak and breathing in something that isn't car fumes.

It's a solid option for families with young walkers or anyone wanting a straightforward hour out without needing to plan a half-day expedition. The paths are manageable, though they can get muddy after rain, which is fine if you're prepared. You won't find a visitor centre or a café, so bring what you need. The woodland is free to access, and most people find thirty minutes to an hour is about right unless you're particularly into spotting birds or mushrooms.

If you're camping at one of the nearby sites - Cheddar Woods Resort is barely two miles away, Mendip Basecamp only a touch further - King's Wood works as a morning stroll before heading out properly into the Cheddar Gorge area. It's not the main event, but it's a decent warm-up, especially if the kids need burning off before a longer walk. The Mendips are full of bigger, more dramatic woodland, but sometimes a local wood with low expectations and no entrance fee is exactly what you want.
