King's Wood

A proper forest walk rather than a manicured attraction - King's Wood sits just outside Keswick and delivers exactly what you'd want from a Lake District woodland. Tall pines, a decent network of trails threading through the trees, and enough elevation to feel like you've actually done something by lunchtime.

The place works best for walkers with kids old enough not to need constant stopping. You can potter around for an hour or push it to three if you're feeling ambitious and want to link up with the broader fell network. The paths are well-trodden but can get muddy - proper footwear matters. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which is fine if you've brought a flask and a map.

Cloudy days are actually better here than sunny ones. The mist softens the forest and somehow makes the scale feel bigger. Sunny afternoons get busy with school groups and local runners hammering through.

If you're based at Kestrel Lodge or Keswick Camping and Caravanning Club, this is a ten-minute drive and worth blocking in for a morning. It works as a warm-up walk before tackling something more serious on Skiddaw or Catbells, or as a standalone outing if the weather's turned dodgy. Nothing revolutionary, but solid woodland miles at no cost. Bring a decent map though - the paths aren't always signed.
