King George's Field

Walking into King George's Field near Bridport feels like you've stumbled onto someone's secret pocket of Dorset countryside. It's a proper nature reserve - the kind where you can actually hear yourself think, which is rarer than you'd expect along this stretch of the coast.

The field itself is open grassland dotted with wildflowers depending on the season, backed by scrubby woodland that attracts all manner of birds. There's not much in the way of facilities or formal paths, which is rather the point. You wander where the mood takes you, scanning the hedgerows for finches and the occasional sparrowhawk overhead. In spring and early summer the place comes alive with insects and nesting birds - proper wildlife watching territory.

It's best suited to walkers and nature enthusiasts rather than families after a day's activity. Expect to spend an hour or two here maximum, maybe longer if you're into serious birdwatching or photography. There are no visitor facilities that I'm aware of, so take a packed lunch and binoculars if that's your thing.

If you're staying at Seadown Holiday Park or Newlands just down the road, this makes a cracking half-morning detour before heading back for lunch. Golden Cap Holiday Park, further out, is actually closer to better-known spots, but if you want proper quiet without the crowds that come with busier reserves, King George's Field delivers. It's the sort of place that rewards going when others don't - early morning or late afternoon yields the best wildlife moments.
