Kilmodan Church

The churchyard at Kilmodan sits quietly on the Cowal Peninsula, a couple of miles inland from Colintraive. You won't find crowds here - just a small, whitewashed church surrounded by headstones that date back centuries, with the Argyll hills rising behind.

What draws people in is the carved medieval stones scattered about the graveyard. There are proper early Christian markers and some fine carved crosses that speak to the area's importance in the Middle Ages. The church itself is modest - you can usually get inside to have a look around, though opening times aren't always predictable. It's the kind of place where you genuinely feel the weight of local history without any of the tourist machinery.

Walkers love this spot because it sits neatly on routes between Colintraive and the quiet glens inland. If you're staying at Glendaruel Caravan Park, just up the road, it's an easy morning detour before heading into the hills. You'll spend twenty minutes here, maybe half an hour if you take time reading the older stones and looking at the views across toward Bute.

Honestly, this isn't somewhere you'd drive an hour out of your way for on its own. But if you're already exploring Cowal, it's well worth the stop. Local history without the fuss, and proper peaceful. Bring a notebook if you're into gravestone rubbings - there's some beautiful work here.
