Kilmartin Parish Church and Graveyard

The churchyard at Kilmartin sits quietly off the main village street, and what makes it worth stopping for isn't the church building itself - a fairly standard 19th-century structure - but the stones surrounding it. Medieval graveslabs lean against the walls, carved with swords and crosses, and there's a real sense of centuries stacked on top of each other here. You're standing where people have been buried since the 1300s at least.

The graveyard rewards a slow wander. Some of the carved stones are genuinely impressive if you like that sort of thing - intricate Celtic knotwork and heraldry that's lasted through Scottish winters. The church itself is modest inside, though worth a quick look if it's open. There's no charge, no gift shop, no faffing about.

Historically minded visitors and those interested in medieval Scottish art will find this genuinely worthwhile. Families with restless kids might manage twenty minutes. Photographers could easily spend longer picking out details in the stonework.

Kilmartin village sits between Lochgilphead and some of Argyll's best archaeological sites - Bronze Age cairns and standing stones are scattered across the landscape nearby. If you're based at The Pod Over By just down the road, this is a natural stop before or after exploring that stuff. It's the kind of place that rewards proper attention rather than a quick snap from the car park, and that's rather the point of it.
