Kilmartin Museum

The museum sits in Kilmartin village, about twenty minutes south of Lochgilphead, and it's genuinely worth stopping for if you're interested in Scottish prehistory. This isn't a grand stone building - it's modest, which somehow makes it more appealing. Inside, you'll find Bronze Age weapons, carved stones from the early Christian period, and a proper collection of artefacts dug up from the Kilmartin Glen itself.

What makes it work is the focus. Rather than trying to cover everything, the curators have zeroed in on the archaeology of this specific valley, which is absolutely rammed with ancient sites - standing stones, burial cairns, cup-and-ring marked rocks scattered across the landscape. The museum gives context to what you'll actually see when you walk out the door.

History buffs will spend a solid couple of hours here. Families with children might manage forty-five minutes to an hour, depending on how much the kids engage with the interpretive panels. There's enough visual interest - ancient metalwork catches the light nicely - to hold attention without being overwhelming.

The Glen itself is the real draw. After the museum, you can pick a walk and hunt down the sites yourself, which feels genuinely exploratory.
