Kilmartin Church

The churchyard at Kilmartin is where you'll find yourself surrounded by one of Scotland's most concentrated collections of medieval carved stones. Gravestones, cross-slabs, and monuments lean against the church walls like a library of the dead - each one tells you something about who mattered in Argyll centuries ago.

Walking round, you're struck by how intimate it feels. There's no velvet rope, no interpretive boards telling you what to think. Just you, the stones, and the chance to trace your fingers over worn carvings if the mood takes you. The church itself, modest and functional, sits at the heart of what locals call the Kilmartin Glen - a landscape absolutely thick with Bronze Age cairns, standing stones, and archaeological sites stretching back thousands of years.

This appeals most to history types and walkers willing to piece things together themselves. If you're after dramatic ruins or grand architecture, you'll be disappointed. But if you enjoy the texture of real history - seeing how ordinary people marked their dead, how skills were passed down through generations - it's genuinely rewarding.

Lochgilphead is just down the road, making this an easy stop if you're based at The Pod Over By or exploring the glen properly. Allow an hour to walk round properly and read the stones. There's no charge that I'm aware of. Go early on a clear day when the light catches the carvings properly - that's when you'll see why people bothered to carve at all.
