Kildonan Bay, dun

You're standing on a windswept stretch of Argyll coastline where Iron Age folk once built their lives around this sheltered bay. Kildonan Bay isn't spectacular in the modern sense - there's no visitor centre, no reconstructed roundhouse, just the bones of an ancient settlement left to the elements and the archaeologists' notebooks.

What draws you here is the chance to walk where people lived two thousand years ago. The rocky shore reveals post holes, stone foundations, and the occasional artifact that hints at daily existence in a very different Britain. It's the kind of place that rewards slow exploration - bring binoculars if you're into birds too, because the bay is genuinely lovely for that.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from this site. You'll need to do your homework beforehand because there's minimal interpretation on the ground. It's a proper trek from Campbeltown - about an hour's drive through proper rural Argyll - so don't make it an impulse visit. Allow a good couple of hours to wander properly, longer if you're photographing or sketching.

Free, naturally, since it's an archaeological site rather than a managed attraction. Timing-wise, go when the light's decent and the weather's not actively trying to kill you. Winter storms have scoured this coast for millennia, and you'll feel it.

Worth the detour if Iron Age Scotland genuinely interests you. Otherwise, you might find yourself slightly disappointed by the lack of obvious remains.
