Kidwelly Quay

The waterfront at Kidwelly is a proper tidal affair - one minute you're looking at mud flats and moored boats sitting at odd angles, the next the Tywi River floods in and everything floats. The quay itself is modest, honestly. A stone-built stretch with a handful of working fishing boats and some leisure craft, backed by a scattering of local pubs and a fish and chip shop that does a roaring trade when the tide's right.

Walkers get the most from this spot. There's a decent riverside path heading east toward Ferryside, and the quay makes a natural stopping point for a break. Bring binoculars if you're into birdlife - cormorants, curlews, and egrets work the mudflats depending on the season. Kids won't stay occupied for hours, but it's free to wander about and there's enough of a working harbour feel to hold their attention for twenty minutes or so.

It works well as a stop-off if you're based at Parkdean Resorts Carmarthen Bay, just under a mile away, or any of the caravan sites dotted around Pembrey and Ferryside. The town of Kidwelly itself has enough of interest - the castle's worth a visit if you're already here. But the quay? Go for the walk and the fish supper, not expecting fireworks. Best at high tide when the water's actually there.
