Parc Stephens

The wetland walks at Parc Stephens pull you straight into proper South Wales countryside, just outside Kidwelly. This is a nature reserve that takes itself seriously - reed beds, open water, the lot - and it's the kind of place where you'll actually spot things if you keep quiet and move slowly. Herons, if you're lucky. Dragonflies in summer. The paths wind through managed habitats that feel wild but are clearly well-looked after.

It's ideal for birdwatchers and anyone who finds peace in marshland, though families with younger kids might find an hour enough before restlessness sets in - there's not much to do beyond walking and looking. No playground, no café as far as I can tell. The reserve itself is free to access, which is generous, and you can usually park near the entrance.

What makes it worth a stop during a park holiday is proximity. You're minutes from Parkdean Resorts Carmarthen Bay Holiday Park, and closer still to Gwlad Glamping and Hazeldene Caravan Park if you're staying locally. The walks aren't strenuous - you could manage them in an hour or less - so they work as a morning mission before heading elsewhere or as an evening wind-down. Best visited early or late when light hits the water properly and wildlife's more active. Winter sees more visiting birds, so December through February has its appeal if you're patient.
