What you're looking at is one of Yorkshire's genuine archaeological treasures, though 'looking at' is about all most visitors manage without proper preparation.

The bridge itself is fragmentary. Time and the river have taken their toll, so don't expect an Instagram moment of pristine Roman masonry. What remains are the foundations and lower courses - enough to tell you this was built to last, properly engineered, part of the supply route to Tadcaster's Roman fort. The setting matters more than the remains themselves. Stand here on a quiet morning and you're standing where soldiers once crossed, where supply carts rumbled through, where the empire's reach extended into Yorkshire mud.

History enthusiasts will find this more rewarding than casual visitors. Kids might get ten minutes of interest before asking what's for lunch. The walk itself is the real draw - approach it as a riverside ramble rather than a destination attraction. Allow an hour to get there and back from Tadcaster town centre, longer if you fancy following the Wharfe upstream.

Kettleman works best as a stop on a longer walking route rather than a standalone visit, but that's rather the point with authentic archaeology.
