Kensington Walk Park

A proper walk through mixed woodland and open grassland just outside Weymouth, Kensington Walk Park is one of those reserves that catches you off guard. You're not expecting much - it's only a nature reserve, after all - but the paths are well-maintained and there's genuine variety here: ancient trees, open clearings where you might spot birds, the occasional pond. The whole circuit takes about ninety minutes if you dawdle, which you probably will.

It's the kind of place that works best for people who actually enjoy walking rather than those after a landmark photo. Families with primary-aged kids will do fine for an hour or so; older children might find it a bit tame unless you're keen on spotting wildlife. Serious bird-watchers and botanists will want to bring binoculars and a guide - there's real habitat here, not just ornamental planting.

Being just minutes from Weymouth, it's ideal for breaking up a caravan holiday at somewhere like Crossways or Green Valley Yurts. If you're staying at either site, this is a solid morning activity before heading to the beach or town. Admission appears to be free, which is reason enough to give it a go. Spring and early summer are best - the woodland floor gets lush and you're more likely to hear birdsong.

Worth the detour if you're in the area with an hour to spare. Don't expect dramatic views or rare sightings, but it's a genuine bit of Dorset countryside within walking distance of your holiday base.
