Came Wood

Ancient beech trees tower overhead as you follow the winding paths through this lovely stretch of woodland just inland from Weymouth. Came Wood offers proper escapism from the coast - the kind of place where you can hear birdsong instead of seagulls and feel soft earth underfoot rather than sand.

Walking enthusiasts will find several well-marked trails threading through the canopy, though families should know the terrain can get muddy after rain. Kids love scrambling over fallen logs and hunting for wildlife, but younger ones might find the longer routes a bit much. Allow a good two hours if you want to explore thoroughly.

The wood sits conveniently close to several holiday parks around Weymouth Bay, making it an easy detour for families staying at places like Haven Weymouth Bay or Waterside Bowleaze Cove. It's particularly good on those days when you've had enough of the beach crowds but still want to get the children outdoors.

Best visited in spring when bluebells carpet the forest floor, or autumn when the leaves put on a proper show. Summer can feel a bit dense and airless under the thick canopy. Free to wander, though parking can be limited along the nearby lanes. Not spectacular enough to plan a whole day around, but well worth an hour or two if you're in the area.
