The paths wind through mixed woodland with enough variation to keep things interesting for an hour or two. If you're with kids, they'll burn off energy without the boredom of a flat park walk. Adults after some breathing space will appreciate the genuine seclusion - you won't be jostling past crowds.

The nearest town of Belper sits just a couple of miles away, so you can combine this with a proper look at the mills and riverside there. For caravan-based holidays, The Firs and Carsington Water are both within easy reach - Carsington Water itself is worth the extra five miles if you fancy somewhere with more open views afterwards.

Best visited mid-week when it's quietest, though the woodland doesn't really get mobbed regardless. There's no café or facilities to speak of, so bring what you need.
