Kelly Burn

Water crashes over dark stone in a way that makes you understand why people bothered to trek out here centuries ago. Kelly Burn, near Dollar in Fife, is one of those waterfalls that doesn't announce itself - you have to actually want to find it, which means most visitors skip straight past.

It's a modest drop by Highland standards, but the burn carves through proper woodland, and there's something about the sound and the spray that feels intimate rather than grand. You'll see locals bring kids here for a scramble around the rocks, and it's exactly the sort of place where a half-hour detour becomes the best bit of your walk. The approach takes you through mixed forest, so it's pleasant underfoot and doesn't demand serious kit.

If you're basing yourself at one of the local glamping spots - Fossoway Cabins or Meadow View a few miles away - this makes a solid morning excursion before heading elsewhere. Dollar itself has other walks nearby, so you can string a proper day together. Worth timing your visit for after rain when the water's actually moving, though honestly it's scenic enough even on a dry day.
