Devil’s Mill

The Devil's Mill sits tucked into the Clackmannanshire landscape near Dollar, a working watermill that's been grinding grain since the 1600s. You can still see the massive water wheel turning when conditions are right, powered by the burn that rushes past it - it's genuinely impressive to watch the whole mechanism in motion.

The mill itself is modest rather than showy. There's a small visitor area where you can watch the milling process and pick up bread made from flour ground on site. Most visits take 45 minutes to an hour, depending on how much you chat to whoever's managing things that day. It's the kind of place that appeals far more to history types and anyone with a genuine interest in how things actually work than it does to families expecting high-energy entertainment. Children might manage 20 minutes of genuine engagement before they're ready to move on.

Access is generally free, though donations are appreciated. The site's worth building into a wider circuit if you're based at one of the excellent local parks - Fossoway Cabins is barely a mile away, while Meadow View and Greenhill Farm are both within easy reach. The Dollar Glen walk starts from the same area, so you could easily combine a morning at the mill with a proper hill walk without much driving about. Go when the water level's decent - after rain is ideal for seeing the wheel actually turn.
