Keith's Stone

A weathered slab of stone standing alone on the Highland moor near Dornoch marks one of Scotland's oldest puzzle boxes. Keith's Stone is a Pictish symbol stone - carved sometime between the 6th and 9th centuries with enigmatic designs that archaeologists still can't fully decode. The symbols - a mirror, a comb, and abstract marks - hint at something important: status, ownership, a memorial, nobody really knows.

It's not dramatic in the way you might expect. The stone sits modest and grey against the landscape, roughly two metres tall, worn by centuries of weather. That's rather the point. There's something humbling about standing in front of something that old and realising how little we actually understand about the people who made it. The surrounding moorland is proper empty and quiet - you can hear the wind and not much else.

History enthusiasts will find it worthwhile, though casual visitors might spend twenty minutes here and move on. It's not a destination unto itself, but works well as a stop on a walk or a drive through Sutherland. The nearest proper town is Dornoch, about four miles south, where you'll find cafes and shops. Go when the light is low - the shadows across the carved symbols are worth the wait.
