Bell casting doesn't sound like the sort of thing that'd keep you entertained for long, does it? Wrong. John Taylor & Co in Loughborough is the world's oldest bell foundry still operating, and stepping into their workshop is like walking into three centuries of metalwork and engineering obsession.

You'll see molten metal being poured, bells taking shape in sand moulds, and the sheer scale of what they produce - from church bells to the sort of massive bronze monsters you'd only see in cathedrals. The craftspeople are genuinely good at explaining the process, and there's something mesmerizing about watching something so heavy and complicated get made by hand. Kids find it brilliant; there's fire, noise, and visible results. History types will lose hours here - this place has cast bells since 1839, and you can feel the weight of that heritage.

Visits need booking in advance, which isn't ideal for spontaneous tourism, but it weeds out the half-interested. Allow two hours minimum if you want to actually understand what's happening. The Loughborough location means you're well-placed for a broader trip - Bradgate Park sits just five miles away if you fancy a proper walk afterwards, and the various campsites within a few miles (High Meadows Farm, Meadow Farm Marina) make decent bases for exploring the area.

Worth the detour if you're into how things are actually made. Don't expect a museum gift shop or café - it's a working factory first, visitor attraction second. That's rather the appeal.
