Owen's beach

Owen's Beach is a proper nature reserve just outside Loughborough - though calling it a beach is a bit generous, given Nottinghamshire's landlocked status. What you're actually getting is a freshwater lagoon fringed with reed beds and scrubland, the sort of place that draws serious birdwatchers and anyone after a quiet walk away from the noise.

The reserve itself is small enough to cover in an hour, which is about right. You'll spot wildfowl most seasons, and if you time it right during migration periods, you might clock something more interesting. The paths are straightforward; nothing that'll knacker you, but bring binoculars because that's genuinely what this place is for. Don't come expecting dramatic vistas or a day-long adventure - come because you want to watch birds and soak up some wetland habitat.

Families with young kids might find it a bit dull unless they're already into nature spotting. Walkers doing a longer route through the area will appreciate it as a detour, and it pairs well with the other parks nearby - Holme Pierrepont Campsite and the Caravan Park and Campsite are both within walking distance if you're staying put for a few days.

It's free to access and open year-round, though spring and autumn tend to be best for birdwatching. Bring a waterproof jacket - the ground gets boggy after rain, and you're not going anywhere quickly if you get stuck.
