Jan’s Hill

The walk up Jan's Hill rewards you with proper coastal views once you've made the effort. It's a nature reserve just outside Bridport, and the main draw is the vantage point across Dorset's coastline - on a clear day you can see right along to West Bay's famous cliffs. The reserve itself is fairly modest in scale, nothing too sprawling, but it packs genuine appeal for anyone keen on a bracing walk with a payoff at the top.

The climb isn't brutal, though it's steeper than you might expect from the distance. Most people allow an hour there and back, depending on fitness and how long you linger at the summit. It's free to access, which helps. Naturalists and keen bird watchers get more from it than casual strollers, but families with older kids will find it a decent half-morning activity if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks - Coppet Hill and Golden Cap are practically on your doorstep.

Timing matters. Early morning or late afternoon gives you the best light without fighting crowds, and the wind can pick up considerably depending on the season. Bring proper shoes - it can be muddy after rain. If you're basing yourself at Highlands End or Newlands Holiday Park for a week, Jan's Hill fits nicely into a day exploring the Bridport area, though it's not the sort of place you'd drive hours to visit. It does what it sets out to do well enough.
