Denhay Hill or Jan's Hill

The walk up Denhay Hill - or Jan's Hill as locals call it - takes about twenty minutes from Bridport and rewards you with proper views across the Dorset coast. It's not dramatic stuff, but on a clear day you can see right across to the Chesil Beach and beyond, which beats sitting in town looking at shop windows.

The hill itself is farmland mostly, so you're walking footpaths rather than up a marked trail. That means it feels less like a tourist attraction and more like you've stumbled onto someone's back garden - which, let's be honest, you kind of have. The surrounding villages have a real working landscape feel to them, none of that manicured National Trust business.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's straightforward stuff, no scrambling, and takes well under an hour return trip depending on fitness. Kids might find it a bit dull if they're expecting something more dramatic - there's no playground or viewpoint platform, just fields and a horizon. History buffs won't find much either, though the views south tell the story of how this corner of Dorset has been working landscape for centuries.

Free, obviously - it's a walk across open ground. Best visited on a non-rainy day when visibility's decent; otherwise you're just trudging through mud for views of more mud. From any of the local holiday parks - Coppet Hill's barely a mile away - you could knock this out before breakfast and crack on with the rest of the coast.
