Ipswich Waterfront

The riverside walk along Ipswich's waterfront is a proper tonic if you've been cooped up indoors. What was once a working dock - the town made its fortune on wool and malting - has been transformed into a stretch where you can actually stroll without dodging lorries. The wet dock itself is still there, lined with converted warehouses that now house restaurants, bars, and a few independent shops. On a decent day, it's pleasant enough for a wander with a coffee or lunch, though don't expect dramatic views - this is gentle, understated East Anglia, not Venice.

The real draw is the mix of old and new. You'll spot Tudor buildings tucked between modern apartments, and the old Custom House stands as a reminder of Ipswich's maritime heyday. It's the sort of place where locals actually hang out, which says something. Most of the walking is flat and easy - good for families with younger kids or anyone who can't manage hills - and there are benches dotted along if you want to pause and watch the water.

Allow an hour or two, depending on pace and whether you stop for food. There's no admission charge for the waterfront itself, though obviously eating and drinking costs money. If you're staying at Priory Park just up the road, or any of the camping spots dotted around the area like Cosy Camping Suffolk or Newbourne Woodland Campsite, this makes for a solid half-day break from the countryside. It's not going to be the highlight of your trip, but it's well worth an hour if you're in town.
