Ingleborough National Nature Reserve

The walk up Ingleborough is a proper slog, but on a clear day the view from the summit justifies every burning leg. You're looking at one of Yorkshire's most distinctive peaks - that flat-topped limestone mountain you see from miles around - and the nature reserve protects the fell itself along with the surrounding moorland and limestone pavements. It's a landscape shaped by geology and weather rather than anything you'd call conventionally beautiful, but there's something compelling about all that bare rock and sparse vegetation.

Most people are here for the ascent, and it's a legitimate fell walk rather than a gentle stroll. Allow three to four hours for the round trip from the village of Clapham, which sits just south of Carnforth. The route climbs roughly 2,000 feet and gets genuinely steep on the upper reaches. Not one for very young children or anyone after an easy afternoon, but if you've got competent walkers in the group, the wider views across the Three Peaks landscape reward the effort. On grey days it can feel rather bleak and exposed up top - go with decent weather or give it a miss.

Free to access, as it's open moorland. The nearby campsites like Philpin Farm and The Dalesbridge make convenient bases for a long weekend tackling the local peaks. Worth combining with Chapel-le-Dale if you're making a route of it. Don't expect facilities on the mountain itself - take water and proper kit.
