Ingleborough

The walk up Ingleborough is proper steep, and that's before you even leave the car park near Carnforth. This 723-metre fell dominates the Lancashire landscape, and on a clear day the views stretch all the way to Morecambe Bay - you'll spot the Lake District peaks too if you're lucky. The summit's a bit of an anticlimax, truth be told: a flat plateau with the remains of an Iron Age hill fort, which is interesting enough if you're into that sort of thing, but won't blow your mind if you're expecting something dramatic. Allow three to four hours for the round trip from the nearest town. The terrain's limestone and gritstone, so proper boots are essential - it's exposed up there and the weather can turn fast. Best visited between May and September when the paths aren't waterlogged. Families with older kids (10 plus) who like a challenge will find it rewarding; younger ones might struggle with the endurance bit. The walk itself suits hikers rather than casual wanderers. Several of the local campsite options - Orcaber Farm and The Dalesbridge are both within 4.5 miles - make decent bases if you're planning to tackle the fell as part of a longer park holiday. Worth doing once, particularly if you're exploring the Three Peaks. Just don't expect an easy afternoon stroll.
