Ilsington Wood

The woodland around Ilsington, just north of Dorchester, is proper walking territory. Ancient mixed forest with plenty of shade - the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think, which is rarer than you'd expect near a market town. Paths wind through beech and oak, and in spring the bluebells do their thing without fuss or ceremony. It's not dramatic or jaw-dropping, but that's rather the point. You're here to walk at a reasonable pace, breathe air that doesn't taste of exhaust, maybe spot a deer if you're lucky.

This works best for walkers and families after a proper ramble rather than a quick snap-and-go. A couple of hours is the sweet spot - longer if you're dawdling or have young legs that need burning out. The terrain is manageable, nothing mountainous, though it can get muddy if there's been rain. Frankly, after an hour or so some kids will ask when you're stopping for cake, so manage expectations. Free to access, which is a bonus.

If you're staying at Parkdean Resorts Warmwell or Crossways Caravan and Motorhome Club just down the road, Ilsington Wood makes a sensible half-day detour. It slots into a broader Dorset itinerary nicely - combine it with a wander around Dorchester's Roman bones and a proper pub lunch. Not essential, but if you're in the area with walking boots already on, you won't regret it.
