Knighton Reserve SANG

The Knighton Reserve is a sprawling nature reserve just outside Dorchester that catches most visitors by surprise - it's far more substantial than the name suggests. You're looking at proper walking territory here, with mixed woodland, open grassland, and genuine habitat restoration work happening across the site. The reserve exists primarily as a Suitable Alternative Natural Greenspace (SANG), which means it was created to take pressure off more sensitive coastal areas, but that doesn't make it any less worth your time.

Walkers will absolutely get their money's worth. There are several looped trails threading through different habitats, and you can easily spend two to three hours here without feeling rushed. The woodland sections are genuinely peaceful, especially on weekday mornings when you'll have the place practically to yourself. Birdwatchers tend to do well here too - the mix of habitats attracts everything from common garden species to the occasional rarer visitor.

It's free to access and there's no formal admission process - just turn up and walk. Parking is straightforward, and the paths are well-maintained, though they can be muddy after rain so proper boots are a good shout. Families with older kids will find it engaging; younger children might struggle with the distance if you attempt the longer loops.

Being barely a mile from Parkdean Resorts Warmwell Holiday Park and within spitting distance of several other caravan sites, Knighton works brilliantly as a daily excursion during a Dorset park holiday. It's not dramatic or showy, but it's genuine countryside within five minutes of accommodation - that's proper value.
