Rainbarrows

You won't find much fanfare about Rainbarrows, and that's rather the point. This Bronze Age burial site sits on the Dorset heathland a few miles south of Dorchester, and what you get is essentially a cluster of low earthen mounds - tumuli - dotted across open ground. They're not dramatic. They don't tower. But stand among them on a clear day and you're looking at something genuinely old, roughly 3,500 years old, and that does something to your head.

The appeal here is for proper archaeologists and the sort of walker who gets a kick from knowing what they're looking at. The mounds themselves are modest - knee-high in places - so this isn't a case of scrambling over dramatic earthworks. You're reading the landscape more than gawping at it. Kids might find it dull unless they're already into prehistory; there's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, nothing between you and the barrows themselves.

Access is straightforward enough from Dorchester. There's a footpath approach, and the site's open to the public year-round at no cost. Budget an hour if you're genuinely interested, less if you're just passing through. It works well as a walk-break during a longer Dorset ramble, though honestly, if you're staying at Parkdean Resorts Warmwell or Crossways nearby, you'd get more from Dorchester itself or pushing on to the coast. Worth a detour only if Bronze Age archaeology actually appeals to you.
