Ibsley Common

Walk out onto Ibsley Common and you're onto proper open heathland - the sort of place where you can actually breathe. It sits just outside Ringwood, on the edge of the New Forest, and stretches across enough space that you won't feel hemmed in even on a busy day.

This is genuinely wild ground. Gorse, heather, and scrubby woodland create a landscape that changes with the seasons - golden in late summer, austere and honest in winter. The paths are straightforward enough for families with young kids, though it's boggy underfoot after rain so wellies are non-negotiable. Walkers will appreciate the network of routes that branch off toward the Forest; it's the sort of place where you can do twenty minutes or three hours depending on your mood.

Bird watchers ought to time a visit here. You'll spot Dartford warblers, hobby falcons if you're lucky, and plenty of common heathland birds. History types will note the Bronze Age barrows scattered across the common - signs of ancient settlement.

Free to visit, open all hours. Allow between one and three hours depending on how far you want to roam. If you're based at one of the nearby sites - Fernwood Glamping is closest at just over two miles away - this makes an excellent morning walk before heading deeper into the New Forest proper. The heathland itself won't hold your attention for a full day, but paired with Ocknell Campsite or Longbeech as a base, it's a solid addition to a proper outdoor holiday.
