Hulber Hill

The walk up Hulber Hill takes you through proper Yorkshire moorland on the edge of the Pennines, with Skipton just a few miles south if you need supplies or a decent pub afterwards. It's not a massively high peak - you won't be gasping for air - but the approach is steep enough that you'll feel like you've earned the views when you get to the top. The landscape opens up nicely from up there, rolling across to the surrounding fells and giving you a real sense of where you are in the broader Ribstone Valley geography.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's the kind of hill that rewards a couple of hours of your time without demanding a full expedition, so families with older kids can manage it without too much faffing about. Bring decent boots though - the ground gets boggy in places, especially after rain, and there's nothing worse than squelching back down with wet feet.

If you're staying at one of the parks nearby - Thornton Hall or Deerstone Glamping are within easy striking distance - Hulber Hill works perfectly as a half-day activity. You're not going to spend all afternoon up there, but it's a solid addition to a broader walking holiday in the area. Early morning is the best time to go if you want to avoid the few other people who know about it. The summit itself isn't dramatic, but on a clear day it's a proper viewpoint worth the climb.
