Hoxne Hill

The walk up Hoxne Hill rewards you with views that stretch across Suffolk's gently rolling countryside - hardly dramatic, but proper satisfying on a clear day. It's the sort of place locals know about, not somewhere coach tours queue up for, which is rather the point.

The hill itself rises above the village of Hoxne, east of Woodbridge, and the climb takes maybe twenty minutes from the village. It's an easy walk, nothing steep or technical. At the top you get a genuine sense of elevation - rare enough in Suffolk that it feels like something. On a good day you can see right across the Waveney Valley. Bring binoculars if you're into birdwatching; the open vantage point draws plenty.

History types will appreciate that Hoxne was once significant enough to have a saint - St Edmund, actually - and the landscape itself tells that story without needing much interpretation. It's the kind of walk that suits families with young legs or anyone after a straightforward hour outdoors without scrambling or exposure.

Honestly, it's not worth a special trip on its own. But if you're staying at Savage Glamping or The Croft Campsite nearby - both excellent bases - then absolutely pop over. Combine it with a proper mooch around Woodbridge itself, which has the river and decent shops, and you've got a proper afternoon sorted. Go early morning or late afternoon when the light is better and the crowds - such as they are - have cleared out.
