How Tallon Barrow

A Bronze Age burial mound sitting quietly in the Teesdale landscape near Barnard Castle, How Tallon Barrow is the sort of archaeological site that rewards the curious but won't hold your attention for hours. You're looking at an earthwork - a raised mound where someone was buried thousands of years ago. It's there, it's real, and if you're into prehistory or walking local history trails, it's worth a detour. The site itself is unexcavated, which means what you see is what ancient people left behind, more or less untouched.

The main appeal is for walkers and history enthusiasts rather than families looking for interactive experiences or kids wanting something to climb on. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards that I'm aware of - it's just the mound and the views across Teesdale. Allow thirty minutes maximum, unless you're making it part of a longer circular walk from Barnard Castle. Go in decent weather; muddy fields in February aren't much fun.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Thorpe Farm Centre, The Old Armoury, or the Caravan Club sites a few miles south - this makes a reasonable morning outing before heading into Barnard Castle proper. Combine it with walking to the High Force waterfall or exploring the market town itself, and you've got a proper day sorted. On its own, though, it's more archaeological interest than tourist attraction. Honest assessment: worth knowing about, not worth planning a trip around.
