Tebb Wood

The woodland around Tebb, just outside Barnard Castle, is proper walking country. You're looking at mixed forest - the kind where paths wind between mature trees and the ground stays damp even after dry spells. It's not a manicured destination with visitor centres or waymarked trails, just genuine forest where locals come to stretch their legs.

Walkers will get the most from this spot. The trees provide decent shelter, and there's something about a forest walk that clears your head in ways open moorland doesn't. You can spend an hour threading through the woods or make it longer depending on your mood and fitness. Bring proper boots though - the paths can be boggy, especially on the northern edge where drainage isn't brilliant.

There's no admission charge because there's nothing formal to manage. It's the kind of place you simply arrive at and wander into. The nearest town is Barnard Castle, which sits about 3 miles away - close enough that you could easily combine a morning here with an afternoon exploring the castle itself.

If you're based at one of the local caravan parks - Thorpe Farm Centre is barely over a mile away, or Teesdale's option sits at 3.7 miles - this works as a straightforward morning excursion. Don't expect views or photo opportunities. Come for the peace and the quiet crunch of feet on woodland floor. It's honest walking without the crowds.
