Hove Recreation Ground - Brighton & Hove

The Hove Recreation Ground is essentially Brighton's backyard - a proper local spot that most visitors to the seafront miss entirely. It's a nature reserve tucked into the urban landscape, offering green space and a bit of breathing room from the pier crowds and pebble beaches. You'll find grassland, some woodland patches, and decent walking paths that criss-cross the site. It's the sort of place where locals walk dogs, families let kids run about, and birdwatchers actually find things worth looking at.

Walkers get the most out of this one. It's not dramatic or showy - no dramatic vistas, no clifftop views - but that's rather the point. The paths are straightforward enough for families with pushchairs, though it's nothing like the coastal promenades. Allow an hour if you're just having a wander, longer if you're genuinely interested in what's growing there. Spring and early summer are when it feels most worthwhile, when the reserve actually looks alive.

If you're based at Pegs and Pitches Camping just down the road, or staying at Brighton Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, this is an easy escape from the park without needing to venture far. It's free to access and works well as a break from beach time, though frankly, if you're only in Brighton for a long weekend, your time might be better spent elsewhere.
