Horse Pow Hill

The climb up Horse Pow Hill takes about an hour from Moffat, and on a clear day you get proper views across the Lowlands that make the effort worthwhile. It's not a gruelling slog - more of a steady walk through moorland with decent paths for most of the way up. The summit sits at around 1,700 feet, which means the air gets noticeably thinner as you climb, but nothing that'll faze anyone with basic fitness.

Walkers will find this one rewarding without being punishing. Families with older kids do fine here, though younger ones might struggle with the focus required - there's not much of interest along the way itself, just heather and horizon. The real payoff is at the top, where you can see across the Southern Uplands on a good day. Bring a map though, as the moorland can feel samey in thick cloud.

It's entirely free, and you can start from various points around Moffat depending on which route appeals. Most people allow two to three hours for the round trip. If you're based at Howslack Farm caravan site just outside town, this sits nicely as a morning's outing before heading back for lunch. Winter weather comes in hard up here, so spring through early autumn is your best window. The hill doesn't demand specialist kit - decent boots and waterproof layer will do - but do check the forecast before you set off.
