Horncliff House

Stone foundations poke through the heather on Hawksworth Moor, marking what was once a significant Bronze Age enclosure. The site sits about 50 metres northeast of Horncliff Slade, offering walkers a proper excuse to venture onto this windswept stretch of moorland near Bingley.

What remains today are the earthwork boundaries of an ancient settlement - not much to photograph, but fascinating for anyone with an interest in Yorkshire's prehistoric past. The enclosure would have housed families over 3,000 years ago, and standing here on a clear day, you can see exactly why they chose this elevated spot.

History enthusiasts will get the most from a visit, though the walk across the moor is lovely enough to justify the trek for anyone. Kids might find it a bit abstract unless they're already keen on archaeology. The views across the valley towards Shipley more than compensate for the modest remains.

Allow an hour for the walk from the nearest parking, longer if you want to explore the wider moor. Spring and summer offer the best conditions - winter can be properly boggy. The site appears to have free access as it's open moorland, though check current guidelines.
