Hoofield Covert

A proper woodland walk on the outskirts of Chester, Hoofield Covert is the sort of place locals know about but tourists often miss. The forest sits close enough to the city that you can be among the trees within minutes of leaving the town centre, yet far enough out to feel genuinely secluded. The paths wind through mixed woodland - oak, ash, and plenty of undergrowth that keeps things green even in drier months.

It's ideal for walkers wanting something low-key rather than a full hill challenge. The terrain is manageable, the air proper fresh, and if you time it right you might spot a bit of woodland life. Early morning or late afternoon tends to be quieter than midday. Kids won't get bored for an hour or so, though it's not a destination in itself - more of a lovely break between other bits of a Cheshire holiday.

Being free and having no apparent restrictions on access makes it easy to slot into a park stay at Little Pig Glamping just down the road, or any of the bigger sites like Pitch & Canvas or Birch Bank Farm if you're after more facilities. The walk doesn't demand much planning - just decent shoes and an hour to spare. The main appeal is simply having proper woodland on your doorstep when you're staying near Chester, without needing to drive far or pay entry fees. Real value for a half-morning wander.
