Iddinshall Rough

Iddinshall Rough is a proper woodland walk just outside Chester - the sort of place locals know about but visitors often miss. It's not a manicured country estate or a visitor centre with a café; it's genuine forest where you can lose yourself for an hour or two without bumping into crowds.

The woodland itself is fairly dense with mature trees, decent paths winding through, and enough variation in terrain to keep things interesting. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Little Pig Glamping or Pitch & Canvas are both within easy striking distance - it makes a solid morning or afternoon outing. Walkers will appreciate the natural feel of it. Families with younger kids might find it a touch samey after 45 minutes, but it's the kind of place where you can make your own adventure through the trees.

It's free to access, which is always a bonus. Bring decent footwear - it can be muddy, especially after rain. The rough is best visited in autumn when the light filters through properly, though spring's decent too. Summer gets a bit oppressive with all the growth.

As part of a park holiday around Chester, this works well as a low-key break between days spent exploring the city or hitting the bigger attractions. It won't take you all day, but it beats sitting at the caravan in the afternoon. Close enough to Chester that you're not wasting time driving, far enough away to feel like you've genuinely escaped.
