Honeybed Wood

Dense woodland that feels genuinely wild - Honeybed Wood is the sort of place where you can actually lose the sound of traffic within fifty metres of the car park. It's a proper forest walk rather than a manicured nature trail, with paths that wind through mature beech and oak, the kind of trees that make you feel properly small.

The wood sits just outside Calne, so it's handy if you're based at The Retreat Glamping or Roe Deer Fields nearby. Come for the sheer quiet of it - there's something restorative about spending an hour among this many trees without seeing another soul. Walking boots recommended; the ground gets muddy even days after rain.

It's free to wander, no gates or admission charges as far as I can tell. Allow a good couple of hours if you want to explore properly rather than just knock out a quick loop. The wood works brilliantly for families who've had enough of structured attractions - kids tend to get genuinely engaged when there's actual terrain to navigate, fallen logs to clamber over, and the chance of spotting deer. Older walkers and anyone after a bit of forest therapy will find it worthwhile.

Go autumn or early spring when the undergrowth is less dense and you've got better visibility. Summer can be a bit suffocating when everything's in full leaf. It's not dramatic - no waterfalls or ruins - but if you want honest woodland without the tourist infrastructure, this does the job well.
