Home of the Black Swans

The wetland at Dawlish is genuinely worth a detour if you're anywhere near Devon's coast. Black swans - those dramatic dark birds with scarlet beaks - are the main draw here, and they're unmissable when they're in residence. You'll spot them gliding across the water alongside the usual mallards and coots, which makes for a proper change from your typical park pond.

The reserve itself is straightforward: paths wind through marshy ground with viewing areas scattered about. Bring binoculars if you're serious about birdwatching - the light's best in early morning or late afternoon when the swans are most active. It's free to visit and doesn't require booking, which is refreshing. You can easily spend an hour here without rushing, though it's not the sort of place where families with restless toddlers will last long. Teenagers might surprise you though - there's something hypnotic about watching the swans navigate the reeds.

The ground can be boggy after rain, so proper footwear matters. Winter brings migrant waders if you're into that side of things. The location works well as a break between Haven Devon Cliffs Holiday Park and the seafront itself - Dawlish town centre is minutes away when you need a coffee or something to eat. If you're staying at either of the nearby parks, this is an easy morning visit before heading to the beach properly. Not dramatic, but genuinely peaceful.
