Home Loch

Home Loch sits just outside Forfar in a quiet corner of Aberdeenshire, and it's the sort of place you might drive past without realising what you're missing. The water stretches out peaceful and flat, ringed by low woodland that softens the Highland edges rather than dominating them. It's more understated than dramatic, but that's rather the point.

Walkers get the most from it. There's a decent circuit around the loch that takes the best part of an hour at a casual pace, and the ground is manageable even after rain. Birdwatchers come here regularly - you'll spot mallards, herons, and if you're lucky, the occasional osprey passing through. Families with young kids will manage fine on the paths, though it's not the sort of place where they'll be clamouring to stay for hours.

The light here is proper Scottish - soft and shifting throughout the day, which means the photographs improve as the afternoon wears on. Worth timing your visit for late afternoon if weather allows. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so bring what you need.
