Holy Trinity & St Jude's Church

The church sits on a gentle slope above Elland, its stone walls weathered by centuries of Yorkshire rain. Holy Trinity and St Jude's isn't flashy - there's no gift shop, no visitor centre, just a proper working parish church that's been standing here since medieval times, though it's been rebuilt and fiddled with over the centuries like most English churches have.

You'll find decent Victorian stained glass inside, and the kind of quiet that only old churches manage. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think, which is rarer than it should be. The churchyard's worth a wander too - gravestones dating back generations tell the story of this corner of West Yorkshire better than any plaque could.

This is one for history types more than casual tourists. If you're into ecclesiastical architecture or just want to sit in the cool for twenty minutes, you'll get something from it. Don't expect to spend hours here though - thirty minutes covers it properly. Check ahead for opening times as it's not always staffed.

It works well as a stop if you're basing yourself at Hebden Bridge Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Old Chamber Camping, both excellent spots for exploring the Calderdale area. Elland itself is unremarkable but functional - grab a coffee, have a look at the church, and move on to better things in the surrounding hills. The real appeal is the walk to get here rather than the destination itself.
