Holy Trinity Church

The church sits right on Kingsbridge's high street, and you'll spot its sturdy stone tower before you've even parked the car. Holy Trinity is the sort of place that rewards a proper look around - medieval bones with Victorian restoration work that's actually been done well, rather than the heavy-handed stuff you find elsewhere.

Inside, there's proper stained glass, some decent carved wood, and the kind of quiet that makes you realize how much noise you carry around with you. The tower itself dates back centuries, which explains why it's so solid. If you've got kids in tow, they might manage twenty minutes of reverent shuffling before getting restless, but the architecture alone is worth a visit if you're into that sort of thing.

It's free to wander in during daylight hours - no faffing about with admission fees. The walk from any of the nearby parks takes ten minutes flat. Braddicks is literally three hundred metres away, which means you could easily pop in before heading down to the South Hams for the day. Pair it with a proper look round Kingsbridge itself - the town centre has enough character that you won't feel like you've wasted the trip if you spend longer than expected.

Best visited on a weekday morning when the place is genuinely peaceful rather than on a busy Saturday when tourists are using it as a shortcut. Allow forty minutes if you want to actually read the memorials and examine the details rather than just poking your head in.
