Holy Ascension Church

The Holy Ascension Church sits quietly in the Yorkshire Dales, a few miles from Settle, and it's one of those places that rewards the detour if you're already walking the fells. The church itself is modest - Victorian Gothic done proper, with that earnest Victorian belief that a bit of pointed arch and stone tracery could bring salvation to remote dales communities. Inside, there's decent stained glass and the usual Victorian hymn boards, nothing that'll blow your mind but solid enough if you're church-spotting.

Walkers get the most from this one. It's not a destination in itself - you won't spend two hours gawping at it - but it works brilliantly as a waypoint on a circular walk around Settle or up towards Malham. The setting matters more than the building: moorland all round, proper quiet, the sort of place where you actually hear the wind. Twenty minutes to look round, tops.

If you're camping or glamping nearby - Ribblesdale Pods or Orcaber Farm Caravan Park are close enough - you could take it in as part of a morning ramble before lunch. Free to visit, as far as one can tell, though opening hours aren't guaranteed so don't bank on it if you're on a tight schedule. Architecture enthusiasts might find it a bit thin, honestly, but for anyone wanting to string together a proper dales walking day, it's a useful landmark and a moment's peace.
