The woodland around Battle is proper dense, and Holman Wood delivers what you're after if you want to lose yourself in Sussex forest without the crowds. It's a genuine working woodland, not a theme park version of nature, so expect muddy tracks, fallen branches, and the kind of quiet that actually makes you notice birdsong.

You're looking at a straightforward walk through mature trees, with the sort of dappled light that makes even a grey day feel atmospheric. There's no visitor centre or information boards, which is either brilliant or annoying depending on how you feel about that sort of thing. I found it refreshing - just you, the trees, and whatever wildlife decides to show itself.

This is walker territory, really. Families with young kids might manage an hour before legs start complaining, but if you've got older children or you're keen on forest bathing, you could easily spend a couple of hours here. The woodland isn't particularly hilly, which counts in its favour if you're not after a strenuous morning.

Stay at Seven Acre Woods if you want to be practically on the doorstep, though it's worth combining this with the wider Battle area - there's proper history here that matters.
