Thorp's Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a manicured attraction, Thorp's Wood sits just outside Battle in Sussex and gives you exactly what it says on the tin - trees, paths, and the kind of quiet you don't get near town. There's no visitor centre or café, which means it stays refreshingly low-key. You're looking at a mixed forest with decent walking routes through beech and oak, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think.

It works best for walkers who want something genuine rather than polished. Families with older kids will be fine - younger ones might find it a bit samey after 45 minutes unless you make a game of spotting wildlife. The ground can be muddy even days after rain, so proper footwear matters. Allow an hour or two depending on which paths you take. Free to enter, no facilities to speak of.

If you're camping nearby at Seven Acre Woods or one of the other parks strung between Battle and the coast, this is a solid morning or afternoon option that breaks up park time without requiring a car journey. It's not going to blow your mind, but it's the kind of walk that reminds you why you came to Sussex in the first place - low hills, old woodland, peace and quiet. Worth fitting in if you're in the area, not worth diverting for on its own.
