Pond Wood

Pond Wood is a proper Sussex woodland just outside Battle, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's mostly beech and oak, with a small pond that gives the place its name - nothing dramatic, but genuinely peaceful. The woodland floor is soft underfoot, and in spring the bluebells do their thing across the clearings. You're looking at a straightforward woodland walk rather than a destination with bells and whistles. There are no facilities to speak of, no visitor centre, no café. It's just trees, quiet, and the occasional dog walker.

Walkers will find this worthwhile, especially anyone after a gentle leg-stretch before or after visiting Battle itself. It's the sort of place you can potter about for an hour without feeling rushed. Families with younger kids might find it a touch dull unless they're keen on spotting woodland creatures or collecting fallen branches, but older children who enjoy being outdoors will be fine here.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Seven Acre Woods is practically on the doorstep at just 0.3 miles away, while Coghurst Hall and Crowhurst Park sit a bit further out - Pond Wood makes a decent morning outing to break up a holiday. It slots in nicely with a trip to Battle Abbey. Admission appears to be free, as with most woodland walks in the area. Turn up early to avoid other walkers and you'll have the place to yourself.
