Hoist Covert

Ancient woodland east of Saxmundham that's genuinely rather special if you know what you're looking for. Hoist Covert is proper old-growth forest - the kind of place where you half expect to stumble across a gamekeeper's cottage or a forgotten folly. The trees here have serious presence. They're tall, dense in places, and the floor is thick with the kind of undergrowth that tells you this land hasn't been logged to death.

Walkers will find it rewarding. There's a decent network of paths threading through, though nothing marked with signs - you'll want a map or local knowledge to make the most of it. Allow an hour or two wandering. Spring is genuinely lovely here when the bluebells come through, and autumn's decent too if you don't mind the mud. Winter can be mucky underfoot.

Historically minded types get a kick out of the old woodland management practices still visible - coppiced sections, mature standards scattered throughout. It's the kind of place that shows how people have shaped the Suffolk landscape over centuries. Not a walk-up-and-snap-photos sort of location, which is precisely why it matters.

Good base for this would be Pigs in Blankets, the glamping spot just 2.7 miles away, which gives you somewhere comfortable to land after a proper forest ramble. The covert itself asks little of visitors - free access, no facilities that I'm aware of - so come prepared. Bring a map, bring time, and bring realistic expectations. This is about feeling ancient woodland, not ticking boxes.
