Hockley Wood

Walking into Hockley Wood feels like stepping properly off the beaten track - which, given it's barely three miles from Longney, is rather the point. This is dense woodland without the visitor infrastructure you'd find at some of the bigger Gloucestershire forests. Beech and oak dominate, with the sort of tangled undergrowth that makes you feel like you've ventured somewhere genuinely wild, even though you haven't.

What you get here is straightforward: footpaths threading through mature trees, plenty of shade, and the kind of quiet you only find when there aren't car parks and cafes. It's proper walking territory rather than a destination in itself. Family groups with restless kids might find an hour enough before everyone's had enough of mud and roots. History enthusiasts won't find much to anchor them - it's about the woodland experience, not what happened here.

The nearest camping options are Baldwin's Brook Glamping (under three miles away) or Apple Orchard if you want something simpler. If you're basing yourself at any of the caravan parks in the area, Hockley Wood works well as a morning walk - nothing strenuous, just a proper forest sortie. Access appears to be free, though you'll want sturdy shoes and likely a map or phone with offline capability, as signage is minimal.

Best visited when conditions are dry. In winter mud it becomes more of a slog than a stroll, and summer growth can make some paths tricky to follow. Not spectacular enough to plan a trip around, but exactly the sort of place to know about if you're camping locally and fancy getting under the trees for a couple of hours.
