Hockering Playing Field

Twenty minutes east of Fakenham, Hockering Playing Field is one of those Norfolk reserves that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards a quiet walk. It's a modest expanse of grassland and wetland bordering the River Wensum - the sort of place where you'll spot reed warblers in summer and overwintering wildfowl if you time it right.

The reserve itself is straightforward: a gentle walk through open field with viewing points where the river snakes through. On a clear day it's genuinely restful. You're not climbing anything or queuing for a café. Just you, some seriously dedicated birdwatchers with telescopes, and the occasional heron.

Families with young children might find it a bit thin on drama. An hour covers it comfortably unless you've got binoculars and genuine patience for ornithology. History buffs won't find much to grip them. But if you're based at Bylaugh Country Park Caravan and Campsite nearby and want a proper morning walk without faffing about - say, when the weather's decent and you want some fresh air before lunch - this does the job.

Bring a small pair of binoculars even if you don't think you're a bird person. Spring and autumn are best for migrant species. Free access, no fixed hours that I can find - just turn up when you fancy it. It's the sort of Norfolk reserve that reminds you not every natural space needs to be Instagram-friendly to be worth your time.
